アウディは2016年9月30日、SUVの生産拠点となるメキシコ工場を開設したと発表した。この工場では新型Q5が生産され、世界に供給される。

新工場は、400ヘクタールの敷地の中にプレス工場、ボディ工場、塗装工場、組み立てライン工場を構える。

Q5の生産は年間15万台。2016年の暮れまでに新たに4200人の従業員を雇用し、世界供給の基盤をさらに整える。なおアウディはプレミアムメーカーとして初めてメキシコに工場を開設した企業となった。

工場に訪れたアウディ取締役会会長のルパート・シュタートラー氏は「メキシコ工場の開設は、我々の会社の歴史におけるマイルストーンであり、国際化を推進するアウディにとって、大きなステップ。新工場はアメリカ大陸におけるもっとも近代的な工場のひとつ。この生産設備により、世界中のお客様に製品を供給する重要な拠点を確立することができた」と述べた。

編：国内メーカーでは日産、マツダがメキシコに生産工場をもっているが、いずれも北米向けを中心とした工場で、25万台/年規模が量産メカ―としては一つの目安かもしれないが、プレミアムブランドで15万台規模は強烈だ。
